WASHINGTON, June 26 - The United States is expecting from General
Nebojsa Pavkovic to act in accordance with democratic principles
and step down from the post of the Yugoslav Army's chief-of-staff, a
spokesman for the US State Department, Richard Boucher, said on
Tuesday. #L#
Boucher declined to comment on the developments after Yugoslav
President Vojislav Kostunica decided to fire Gen. Pavkovic on
Monday and after the general seemed not willing to step down
quietly.
It is an internal issue of Yugoslavia and Kostunica is a holder of
legal civilian authorities in the country, the US official said.
Asked whether Washington fears that the army might offer some
resistance to the Yugoslav political leadership, Boucher answered
that for the United States it was a fundamental principle that the
military was inferior to civilian authorities.
We ardently hope that Pavkovic will respect the principle, he
added.
