ZAGREB, June 20 (Hina) - The attorney of Hague war crimes tribunal
suspect Ante Gotovina said on Thursday the Croatian government had
violated the Constitution and Gotovina's constitutional right to
defence. #L#
US attorney Luka Misetic told Hina the fact that the government
refused to hand over to Gotovina's lawyers the documentation they
had requested, and the municipal court in Zagreb had urged the
government to do, proved the government had violated the
Constitution and Gotovina's constitutional right to defence.
Misetic said he would seek a meeting with the Hague war crimes
tribunal's chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte. He said he would
submit to the tribunal documentation proving that General
Gotovina, who is at large, was "innocent and did not organise the
persecution of Serb civilians, which the indictment charges him
with."
The Zagreb Municipal Court today passed a decision which Misetic
said proved that there were honourable and professional people in
the Croatian judiciary who were doing their job in line with the law
and the Constitution and were willing to protect the basic rights of
the individual, even when the government did not want to.
