The summer season will be opened with the performance of "King
Lear", produced by Lenka Udovicki, on the island of Mali Brijun on
17 July. This Croatian island will host ten plays, said Rade
Serbedzija, the theatre's founder and main character in "King
Lear".
He recalled that the play's premiere last summer had been seen by an
audience of 7,000.
Eurupidis' Medea, also produced by Mrs. Udovicki, will have its
first run on 10 and 11 August on Mali Brijun. The play will be
performed in Zagreb, Kopar, Ljubljana, and Sarajevo by the end of
2002.
A famous American actress, Amanda Plummer, will play in Beckett's
Happy Days, Serbedzija said.
The theatre's co-founder, Borislav Vujcic, denied media reports
about a conflict between the Croatian municipality of Vodnjan and
the theatre. He said the theatre had a contract on cooperation for
five years, and the Vodnjan authorities had helped the theatre much
last year.
Asked about speculations that the entire project cost more than two
million kuna (274,000 euros) in 2001, Vujcic replied that it cost
1.3 million kuna (EUR178,000).
Serbedzija added that the money had not been spent on anybody's
private interests and actors received average Croatian payments.
The price of the project for this year has not yet been determined,
and it will be known at the end of the season, Vujcic said.
The event, sponsored by Hypo Alpe-Adria Bank, will be covered by the
EPH media house, and supported by Croatia's ministries of culture
and defence.
