ZAGREB, June 11 (Hina) - Tourism results in the first five months of
2002 prove the significantly improved preparedness of Croatian
hoteliers for the coming tourist season in relation to last year,
the presidency of the Croatian Association of Hoteliers (HUH) said
in a statement on Tuesday. #L#
The statement includes conclusions adopted at a meeting of the
association held in Sibenik last week.
In six counties and the City of Zagreb, more than 4.6 million
overnight stays were recorded, which is a 20 percent increase in
relation to the same period last year.
The association warned that claims that Value Added Tax would not be
decreased in 2003 would not contribute to raising Croatia's
competitiveness in tourism and hotel industry.
The Association believes that a graduated VAT rate, similar to
those in rival tourist countries, should be introduced for all
types of tourist spending.
Hoteliers also called on the Tourism Ministry to negotiate with the
Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development so that it re-
programme loans for hoteliers who cannot meet their obligations.
The presidency also warned of the negative effects of the
appreciation of the national currency during last year's season and
warned that it could additionally lessen this year's business
results.
