The construction of the 90 square metre chapel was commenced by the
Serbs while the town was under occupation. The land the chapel was
built on is owned by the Lovas primary school, the municipal head,
Zeljko Cirba, said. He added that the cemetery currently has 17
graves but it is not possible to tell whether they still contained
bodies or if these had been exhumed prior to the town being returned
to the Croatian legal-administrative order.
The chapel is partly built, with part of the roof and the facade,
while the interior is yet to be completed.
Two years ago, another Orthodox church built in Lovas without a
permit, in the style of one in Belgrade, was also demolished. That
church, Cirba said, was built on private property owned by
displaced Croats even though an insignificant number of Serbs
actually lived in Lovas prior to the war.
