Arhar said that he did not wish to compete as a candidate of any
party, but he expected support from those parties that would back
his platform.
He noted that the key features of his platform would be to
strengthen the law-based and social state. Amongst other things,
Arhar has advocated monetary and social stability and warned of the
sacrifices that are required if Slovenia is to become a member of
the European Union.
Arhar (aged 54) was the governor of Slovenia's central bank between
1991 and 2001 and is considered to be among those deserving the most
credit for the country's relative monetary stability in that
period.
He currently heads a small insurance company. Early this year the
Slovene government commissioned him along with a group of experts
to deal with the Basel negotiations on succession to savings
deposits in Ljubljanska Banka Zagreb.
