The disabled veterans wanted to express their stand on the
government's failure to forward into parliamentary procedure
amendments to the law on war veterans' rights even though the
competent parliamentary committee requested so two months ago.
The disabled veterans were stopped by the police as parliament was
holding a special session on the occasion of May 30, Croatian Sabor
Day. Rallying in St. Mark's Square was prohibited from 9 am to
noon.
Members of the Association of 100% Disabled War Veterans said that
today's public rally was an attempt to support parliament's war
veterans' committee and party benches in forwarding amendments to
the law on the rights of war veterans and their families into urgent
parliamentary procedure.
Under said amendments, 100-percent disabled war veterans would be
give back the right to compensation for care and the assistance of
another person regardless of whether they have a care-giver,
Association president Djuro Glogoski said.
Parliament's war veterans' committee unanimously adopted a bill of
amendments to said law in mid-March, requesting the government
forward them into urgent parliamentary procedure before the next
session. The government has still not done so.
The Association's members also intend to support the laid-off
policemen who have been protesting in front of the government.
