ZAGREB, May 23 (Hina) - Of the 834 unassigned policemen, the Interior Ministry will reinstate 154, 189 will be transferred to the Customs Department and court police, while 491 will seek employment through the Croatian Employment Bureau, the Croatian government decided on Thursday. #L# A further 120 unassigned policemen were eligible for retirement and 28 have found employment elsewhere, notes a report presented to the government by a commission in charge of dealing with the problem of unassigned policemen. The government appointed a delegation that will talk to the unassigned policemen who have been protesting in front of the parliament building. Prime Minister Ivica Racan said that something needed to be done urgently to stop the hunger strike of police officer Zvonko Lovrencic. The government also considered a report on appeals submitted by the unassigned policemen due to irregularities in their dismissal. Disciplinary measures have already been taken against some police officials and in some cases criminal charges have been brought. The government agreed to a suggestion by Deputy Prime Minister Goran Granic that a distinction should be made between the unassigned policemen lacking adequate qualifications and those who were not worthy of the service or falsified their qualifications.
