The Laureus Awards ceremony, widely regarded as the sports Oscars,
was held in Monte Carlo on Tuesday evening.
The Croatian, who had entered the Wimbledon tournament as a
wildcard after dropping to 125th in the rankings, beat Australian
Patrick Rafter in a nailbiting final to clinch the title.
Also in the competition for this prestigious award were great
Michael Jordan, golf players John Daily and Berhard Langer, and
hockey player Mario Lemieux.
Special guests at the ceremony were this year's triple Olympic
champion Janica Kostelic and her brother Ivica, this year's World
Cup Slalom champion.
The host of the ceremony was the star of E.R. Eriq La Salle, while
the awards were presented by Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-
Jones, Morgan Freeman, Sean Connery, Heidi Klum, Michael Johnson,
