Belkic told reporters upon return to Sarajevo that there were firm
pledges on the allocation of around US$5.2 million for the
reconstruction of the wider Srebrenica region as part of efforts to
encourage refugee returns.
Donors that have given pledges include the USA, Norway, Italy and
Turkey. Belkic believes there should not be any major problems in
collecting the US12.5 million required.
A programme of economic revival in the region, which was drawn up by
the U.N. Development Programme (UNDP), includes two more
municipalities, Bratunac and Milici.
Belkic added that the main objective was to revive the economy of
the region and reconstruct its infrastructure, thus ensuring the
restoration of multi-ethnic communities.
The prime minister of Republika Srpska, Mladen Ivanic, too, obliged
himself personally to restore the multi-ethnic structure of those
communities, Belkic added.
"It was high time that something was done so that Srebrenica could
be pulled out of its apathy," Belkic said.
The reconstruction project for Srebrenica should commence in
October and will last three years.
It is expected that almost all of the 60 countries which
participated in the conference will be involved in the project as
potential donors.
