Mesic arrived in China today at the invitation of Chinese President
Jiang Zemin. The visit will last several days.
Croatia is a small country, but it is part of a region which belongs
to the large European market and we can be interesting to China and
Shanghai as the centre of Chinese economy, Mesic said.
Shanghai mayor acquainted Mesic with the development of the city,
which has 17 million inhabitants and an annual growth rate of 12
percent. Chen expressed satisfaction that President Mesic was
visiting China on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the
establishment of diplomatic relations between Zagreb and Beijing.
Zagreb and Beijing have been sister-cities for some 20 years, Chen
recalled, expressing hope that Mesic's visit would contribute to
improving relations between Croatia and Shanghai.
President Mesic today made a tour of Xujiahui park, which the city
authorities started building three months ago to improve the living
conditions of its citizens.
The delegation accompanying President Mesic includes Deputy Prime
Minister Drazen Budisa, Finance Minister Mato Crkvenac, and Deputy
Foreign Minister Vesna Cvjetkovic Kurelec. President Mesic will
