More than a thousand children who came to Italy from refugee
collection centres in Croatia were then accommodated with Italian
families near Ancona. Italian families helped Croatian children -
and not only refugee children - through programmes of 'adopting'
children abroad assisted through financial assistance sent to
Croatian children during the aggression against Croatia.
The gathering was greeted by Croatian Ambassador in Rome, Drago
Kraljevic.
"Families in the Italian Marche region as well as other regions,
showed a great deal of human solidarity towards our citizens who
were compelled to leave their homes", Kraljevic said and thanked
all those who helped Croatia and its citizens.
Casini emphasised Italy's sacrifice in offering assistance for
refugees from Croatia and later, Bosnia & Herzegovina.
"We must not forget the conscientiousness and professionalism of
Italian soldiers deployed to Croatia to assist with mine clearance
which has a great social dimension because land mines, above all,
affect children," Casini said.
