In that process, it is particularly important to strengthen the
judiciary, enable refugee returns and property restitution,
promote minority rights and develop good neighbourly relations,
Ambassador Theolin told prefect Sime Prtenjaca during a visit to
Zadar, where he attended an event marking Zadar County Day.
Prefect Prtenjaca told Ambassador Theolin that the international
community frequently demanded of Croatia such minority standards
that did not exist in the EU. "The Serb minority in Croatia,
including Zadar County, will enjoy the same rights that minorities
in the developed democratic world enjoy," Prtenjaca said.
According to Prtenjaca, property restitution is not disputable.
"Croatia is dealing with this issue and will settle it, but patience
is required considering that the country was only recently at war,"
he added.
In response to an objection by Ambassador Theolin that under the
1991 population census, 25 percent of the Zadar County population
were Serbs and that today the figure was significantly lower,
Prtenjaca said that the information was incorrect as it related to
the former Zadar-Knin County and not Zadar County as it was today.
