A Croatian parliament delegation, which is visiting Iran, on
Wednesday held talks with Irani vice president and Prime Minister
Mohamad-Rez Aref and Irani parliament speaker Mahdi Karubi.
During the talks with Aref, the two parties said the Iran-Croatia
political relations were good, but economic ties lagged behind. The
two parties agreed that a joint Croatian-Irani committee for
economic cooperation would meet in Zagreb by this summer, Tomac
told reporters after the talks.
Tomac, however, said Aref expressed dissatisfaction with the fact
that the committee had not met in the past two years.
During the talks with the Irani parliament speaker, Mahdi Karubi,
the two officials discussed the situation in Bosnia and the Near
East.
Karubi said Iran was interested in seeing Bosnia as a place where
the Irani initiative on harmony and not conflict could be
realised.
Commenting on the situation in the Near East, Karubi expressed
satisfaction with the Croatian government's standpoint towards the
Palestinian issue. Condemning terrorism, Karubi said the United
States were taking advantage of the atmosphere created after
September 11. Even though Karubi supports combating terrorism, he
also advocates "alliance for peace and tolerance", Tomac said.
Iran believes that the United States was taking advantage of the
struggle against terrorism to square accounts with countries and
regimes it does not get along with and it was searching for allies,
Tomac said.
The Croatian delegation agreed that the struggle against terrorism
should not effect the limitation of human rights and give a green
light to state terrorism, Tomac said.
On behalf of Croatian parliament speaker Zlatko Tomcic, Tomac
invited Karubi to visit Croatia, which the Irani parliament speaker
accepted.
This afternoon, the Croatian delegation will travel to Shiraz.
