The two presidents also discussed the situation in the region,
Euro-Atlantic associations and global issues. Putin expressed
satisfaction with a positive development of relations between the
two countries and said the Croatia-Russia trade was slowly but
certainly reaching US$1 billion.
Mesic said there are no more prejudices in the relations between the
two countries.
"I believe there are absolutely no obstacles to the development and
strengthening of the Croatia-Russia relations," Mesic told
reporters after meeting Putin.
According to him, the Mesic-Putin talks opened a new chapter in
bilateral relations to the benefit of both countries.
Commenting on the situation in Southeast Europe, Mesic said Croatia
respected Russia's role within the efforts of the international
community invested in strengthening security and establishing
permanent peace in the former Yugoslavia. Putin said his country
was ready to be the mediator and it would guarantee for the
preservation of the stability in the region, in cooperation with
American and European partners.
Mesic said Croatia was open to regional cooperation "which does not
close us in the region, it rather opens the doors for us to the
united Europe".
Mesic said he informed Putin of Croatia's priorities in foreign
policy, namely joining NATO and the European Union. Mesic said this
would not bring into question Croatia's relations with other
countries in any way. He again invited the Russian president to
visit Croatia, which Putin accepted. The date of the visit will be
set later during the contacts between the two countries' foreign
ministries.
Putin told reporters the talks focused on economic ties.
During his three-day visit to the Russian Federation, the Croatian
president will also meet the Russian Duma speaker Genadi
Seleznjev.
