ZAGREB, April 10 (Hina) - President of the Croatian True
Renaissance (HIP) Miroslav Tudjman on Wednesday issued a statement
saying that attorney Anto Nobilo had cited a number of political
constructions which did not correlate to the truth and facts in his
appeal to the verdict against General Tihomir Blaskic before the
Hague-based international war crimes tribunal. #L#
In a section of the appeal against the verdict which was made
public, Nobilo mentioned Miroslav Tudjman in the context of, as the
then director of the Croatian Intelligence Service, he had
submitted reports to the late president Franjo Tudjman, which
indicate that Blaskic is not responsible for the planning and
issuing orders for crime sin Ahmici (central Bosnia), and that
"Tudjman's rule" and the Hague prosecution had kept secret this
evidence.
Tudjman said that Blaskic volunteered to go to The Hague convinced
of his innocence, and that, as Nobilo put it, "Tudjman's rule" had
been convinced of his innocence, and provided him with every
support -- from paying his attorney to gathering necessary
documents.
"Anto Nobilo is lying when claiming that he did not have access to
all archives and documents he requested, which he needed and did not
need," Tudjman said. He added that intelligence services and the
intelligence community had gathered documents in accordance with
Nobilo's requests.
Tudjman said that "incumbent president Stipe Mesic was a witness
for the prosecution, and the incumbent government opened all state
and intelligence service archives -- not for the defence, but the
Hague prosecution, without any restrictions for any of the cases".
"Instead of founding the defence on facts and legal arguments,
Nobilo is founding it on political constructions for which he
believed will respond to domestic and international needs.
However, as the Hague tribunal is starting do work better, as people
who testify to the truth are being called to the stand, and the
testimonies of Mesic, Ashdown and similar people are becoming more
problematic, then it is certain that Blaskic's final verdict will
be different. this is why attorney Nobilo is panicking, and in his
appeal accusing others, seeking perpetrators for his badly
presented defence," Tudjman said in his statement.
