BJELOVAR, April 3 (Hina) - The Association of Croatian Judges (UHS)
opposes the announced introduction of overtime for judges and
considers that such a move will not solve the problem of a million
unresolved cases in the courts, UHS president Vladimir Gredelj said
in Bjelovar on Wednesday. #L#
Speaking at a press conference, Gredelj commented on the
conclusions of Tuesday's session of the UHS Board.
He stressed that overtime could in no way be connected to the idea of
independence of the courts. The UHS is appealing that the funds
foreseen to finance overtime work should be used to ensure adequate
salaries for judges, he said.
Commenting on Gredelj's statement, Justice Minister Ingrid
Anticevic Marinovic said that she was surprised because Gredelj
himself had supported the proposal at a meeting with her.
"Overtime is not being introduced for the sake of increasing income
but for the sake of stimulating the solution of a backlog of more
than a million cases, which should be in the judges' interest too,"
she said. "Besides, such work will be voluntary and in no way will it
infringe on the dignity of judges' work," the minister said at a
panel in Zagreb.
