Five Croatian Army observers returned to Zagreb after their year-
long mandate in Eritrea expired. The observers were part of a U.N.
peace mission approved by a decision of the Security Council in
September 2000 to deploy 4,200 soldiers to supervise a cease fire on
the Ethiopian-Eritrean border following two years of war.
Croatian officers were "respected and valued during the mission",
Chief-of-Staff Petar Stipetic said at a reception at the Croatian
Defence Ministry.
One of the most important peace-time duties for Croatia is to
participate in "defence diplomacy", Rados said, adding that for now
Croatia could take part in smaller formations. Later it will be able
to participate in multi-national peace keeping missions, he
added.
