The action will include programmes aimed at educating the public
about the danger of landmines.
More than 1,800 people have been injured by mines since the
beginning of the war in the early 1990s, including 418 casualties.
The victims are usually civilians returning to pre-war homes who,
doing farm work, enter areas believed to be mine-infested.
Fourteen Croatian counties are infested by mines, with the
situation the most serious in the Sisak-Moslavina, Karlovac,
Zadar, Osijek-Baranja, and Vukovar-Srijem counties.
It is estimated that around 1,700 square km of Croatian land is
mines planted during the war. The solving of the problem could last
until 2010.
