ZAGREB, March 30 (Hina) - Direct investments by Croatian companies in foreign countries in 2001 amounted to 118.49 million dollars. In the period between 1993 and 2001, Croatian investments abroad totalled USD551.94 million, the
Croatian National Bank (HNB) said.

Most investments in 2001 as well as in the 1993-2001 period were
made in the pharmaceutical industry. In 2001 they accounted for
47.23 percent of all investments, and in the 1993-2001 period made
up 43.81 percent of total investments.
Investments in the pharmaceutical industry are followed by those in
maritime and coastal transport, which in 2001 accounted for 39.25
percent and between 1993 and 2001 for 12.98 percent of all
investments.
Other more significant investments were made in the field of
telecommunications (7.78 percent), financial transactions (6.02
percent), and services in the oil and gas industry (5.06 percent).
In relation to the 1993-2001 period, when domestic economy made
most investments in Poland (35.23 percent), Bosnia-Herzegovina
(27.15 percent), the Netherlands (8.15 percent) and Slovenia (8.01
percent), last year the Netherlands accounted for most investments
(37.51 percent). It was followed by Switzerland (12.56 percent),
Poland (12.01 percent), Bosnia-Herzegovina (11.84 percent) and
Austria (7.32 percent).
Last year, direct investments were made also in so-called tax
havens, like the British Virgin Islands (3.94 percent). Between
1993 and 2001 domestic economy also invested in the Marshall
Islands (4.61 percent), and Antigua and Barbuda (3.56 percent).
Direct foreign investments in Croatia last year exceeded 1.4
billion US dollars. Foreign investments between 1993 and 2001
totalled 6.6 billion dollars.
