Commenting on the news of the dismantling of the Yugoslav state and
its name, the daily notes in the editorial headlined "Croatia Faced
With Fateful Decisions" that it is no secret that great powers are
continuing to determine the future of the peoples and states on the
territory of former Yugoslavia.
The integration of the Croatian people into Europe is neither
disputable nor undesirable, but it is questionable if the Croatian
people will join integration processes with a fully-formed
identity and defined national interests or robbed of its material
basis and unable to offer anything unique and original to the
European public, the daily notes.
Commenting on a statement by a representative of the foreign
ministry of the world's leading super-power, who said the
dismantling of Yugoslavia and its name was goods news for Europe and
the future of the western Balkans, the daily notes that great powers
do not want to treat the new states in this part of Europe as
independent and sovereign states, but as a new whole with the
working title "Western Balkans".
The Croatian state, which has been affected by disastrous economic
and social crises and immature politicians whose primarily concern
are their positions and who waste their mandates on privatisation
and sale of what the citizens of every country, including Croatia,
need, is building its future under such circumstances on the
international scene, the daily notes.
It therefore calls on Croatian politicians and all intellectual and
creative forces in the country to assume responsibility for the
country's future. The greatest responsibility lies with
politicians who are making or are about to make crucial decisions.
More than ever in its history Croatia needs ethical politicians,
those who do not have a negative image in the country or abroad and
are willing to enable the best and most competent people to
participate in making decisions which are of crucial importance for
the country's future, reads the editorial.
"Croatia is faced with crucial decisions and can respond to them in
the right way only if competent people are enabled to make them,"
the editorial concludes.
