ZAGREB, March 15 (Hina) - Alternative ways of solving disputes, such as arbitration and mediation, could unburden Croatian courts of many cases. This would also speed up court processes and decrease more than a 1,100,000 of backlog
cases, participants of a round-table conference said on Friday. The conference was held at the Croatian Chamber of Commerce on Croatian Lawyer Day.

Today's, twentieth, Croatian Lawyer Day was dedicated to
alternative means of solving disputes, such as by arbitration and
mediation. Such ways are increasingly used in the European Union
and the United States, but are almost unknown in the Croatian
judicial system.
Supreme Court president Ivica Crnic opened the conference. He said
that as many cases as possible should be solved outside of
courtrooms.
"It is a tradition in Croatia to have everything passed onto courts,
even that which is not contentious, so citizens must be spurred to
solve disputes outside of courtrooms," Crnic said. He stressed that
judges are interested to have a part of the work be relayed onto
attorneys and public notaries.
