NEW YORK, March 5 (Hina) - The UN Security Council on Tuesday
adopted a resolution welcoming the establishment of an EU mission
to Bosnia after the UN mandate has expired. The document encourages
the cooperation and coordination of the current UN mission and
European institutions in facilitating the transfer of
authorities.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan thanked the outgoing international
High Representative, Wolfgang Petritsch. Annan advocated
bolstering the police force which, he said, should guarantee the
security of citizens, returnees in particular, throughout the
country.
Petritsch briefed the Security Council about his work since August
1999, and called on the international community not to lose
interest in Bosnia in what he said was a crucial moment.
Jacques Klein, the UN's special envoy for Bosnia, voiced confidence
the UN mission would successfully end its mandate there and turn the
job over to the European Union.
The Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy and Common
Security, Javier Solana, spoke about Europe's intentions and goals
for Bosnia. The ultimate aim is to make Bosnia a constituent part of
an institutionally linked Europe, he said.
