topic of party leaders' comments. Some maintain the ruling
coalition must make it to the end of the mandate, to carry out
reforms, while some say early elections are the only way out.
The Liberal Party (LS) condemns the destabilisation of the
coalition government, and advocates the survival of the coalition
and a complete, rapid, and resolute implementation of reforms, LS
president Zlatko Kramaric told reporters on Thursday, describing
the situation as delicate.
Croatian Peasants' Party (HSP) president Zlatko Tomcic said the
fact that one fourth of the government's ministers had resigned did
not have to mean anything for the coalition government. He expects
the situation will be settled when the leaders of the ruling five
parties meet tomorrow.
"The IDS is extremely concerned about the relations within the
coalition and expects the coalition will find mechanisms to resume
its joint activity," IDS (Istrian Democratic Assembly) president
Ivan Jakovcic told reporters in Pula. He added the break-up of the
coalition would be very harmful. Should a vote of confidence be
taken, the IDS will support the government, and probably vote in
favour of a minority government as well, he said.
According to Anto Djapic, the president of the Party of Rights
(HSP), the government crisis has hit rock bottom and is the
announcement of early elections.
"With the crisis in relations within the coalition, their personal
relations and the struggle for power, the only proper and real way
out of the crisis are early parliamentary elections," Djapic told
reporters.
He added "the government has to opt for early elections as it didn't
come to power with the programme it is implementing now and which is
diametrically opposite to the programme from the pre-election
campaign." He also objected to the fact that the government has done
nothing to deal with unemployment, and said it had reduced the
monetary policy to the dictate of the International Monetary Fund.
