ZAGREB, Feb 22 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament at the end of this
week's work discussed amendments to a law on rights from pension
insurance of active military and authorised officials, which
should make the reduction of the number of members in defense forces
easier.
By accepting the amendments, the defense minister will be able to
send 10,500 active military persons into retirement in the next ten
years, that is, 1,000 per year.
The law includes a provision which enables the defense minister to
send persons with 20 years of service who are believed to not have a
possibility for professional development, in retirement.
Some deputies expressed reservation with a provision on a
progressive reduction of military pensions by eight to 20 percent
(as it was done with the so-called preferred pensions last
autumn).
Mario Kovac of the Social Liberals is afraid that the provision
could discourage young and capable persons from opting for the
career of a professional soldier.
