ZAGREB/SKRAD, Feb 20 (Hina) - The Government Administration for Water proclaimed the second degree of pollution of surface waters of the Dobra River and subterranean waters near the place of this morning's accident involving a cistern

ZAGREB/SKRAD, Feb 20 (Hina) - The Government Administration for
Water proclaimed the second degree of pollution of surface waters
of the Dobra River and subterranean waters near the place of this
morning's accident involving a cistern with heating oil. Since
there are no pumping sites or fish ponds nearby, water for public
supply has not been endangered, the main state water inspector,
Zeljko Makvic, said on Wednesday.
The cistern which rolled over two kilometres from Skrad near the
upper Dobra River carried 15,000 litres of heating oil. According
to the newest announcement by the State Information Centre, it is
being assumed that the entire amount of oil leaked out.
The "Rijeka Tank" company is cleaning the polluted area and is
making efforts to prevent further contamination. It has put up a dam
on the Dobra River which is only 100 metres away from the site of the
accident. The accident occurred on porous ground which facilitates
the spreading of pollution and obstructs cleaning, Makvic said.
According to the State Information Bureau, the cistern skidded in a
curb on a slippery road from Rijeka to Zagreb and rolled over to a
meadow near the road, while the cabin stayed on the road.
Primorje-Gorski Kotar Prefect Zlatko Komadina, as the county's
Eco-headquarters head, arrived on the accident scene.
