PETRITSCH CONFIRMS HE WILL LEAVE BOSNIA AT END OF MAY

SARAJEVO/BRUSSELS, Feb 18 (Hina) - High representative to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Wolfgang Petritsch, confirmed on Monday that he would be leaving his office at the end of May, having spent the past two and a half years in it. In a speech before the European Union Council of Ministers which convened in Brussels on Monday, Petritsch said the Office of the High Representative had in the past six years created history. According to an earlier decision by the Peace Implementation Council in Bosnia, Petritsch will be replaced by a former British liberal leader, Paddy Ashdown. Petritsch assessed that three basic tasks should be carried out in Bosnia by the end of the year. The first and most important are constitutional changes, that is, the implementation of the Bosnian Constitutional Court's decision that all three peoples in the country were constituent. The second task is a general election which will be organised for October independently by local authorities for the first time since the end of the war. And finally, Petritsch said, we lost too much precious time in trying to bring Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic before justice.
