BOSNIA TO INTRODUCE NEW EXCISE DUTIES ON IMPORTED GOODS

SARAJEVO, Feb 11 (Hina) - Bosnian authorities are preparing the introduction of new excise duties on products imported from Croatia, as well as from other countries. A whole set of measures which will change the current regime of trade in high-tariff goods is being prepared, Foreign Trade Minister Azra Hadziahmetovic has announced. The measures aim to "protect domestic production and prevent crime and smuggling." The excise duties will be based on reciprocity, i.e. amount to those the other country collects on Bosnian goods, Bosnian Federation Finance Minister Nikola Grabovac has said. He maintains it makes no sense to have some cigarette brands manufactured in Croatia cost less in Bosnia than in Croatia. The announcement of new excise duties will certainly open a debate on compliance with the Croatian-Bosnian free trade agreement, which went into force last year. Under Article Fo

The announcement of new excise duties will certainly open a debate on compliance with the Croatian-Bosnian free trade agreement, which went into force last year. Under Article Four of the agreement, neither side will introduce new tariffs or other duties on industrial products. Article 11 applies the same provision to farm produce. The agreement states, however, that each signatory is entitled to take measures to protect its market, which is what the Bosnian side refers to in the case of higher excise duties. (hina) ha sb
