Swamps have been forgotten and are truly endangered, Kovacevic told
a press conference on the occasion of February 2, international
swamp protection day.
He reminded swamps were a Croatian treasure owing to the diversity
of their ecology and landscape, especially important due to the
fact that they are the home of more than 40 percent of animals and
plants.
The most important international agreement on the protection of
swamps is a convention signed in the Iranian town of Ramsar in
1971.
The states which signed the convention have included more than
1,000 swamp areas in the Ramsar list, including Croatia's Kopacki
Rit, Lonjsko Polje, Mokro Polje, the lower Neretva river region,
and the Crna Mlaka fish farms.
Kovacevic said the ministry was currently working on three projects
aimed at swamp protection, one of them in the lower Neretva region
together with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The other two focus on the
revitalisation of Kolansko Blato swamps on the island of Pag, and
the preservation on carp fish farms.
