"We have come to this cathedral to celebrate Christmas, the birth of
Jesus, and embark on a spiritual journey," Bozanic told a packed
Zagreb Cathedral, recalling the words of the prophet Isaiah: "The
people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that
dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light
shined."
"God is absolute loyalty, God does not leave His people, and at
Christmas His merciful love does not diminish, but grows," the
archbishop said in his sermon. "Jesus Christ, the son of God, became
man, ever-lasting joy to us and to our salvation, an infinite hope to
each and every one of us," he added.
Congratulating the faithful on the birth of Christ, Bozanic said that
"joy and peace are the most beautiful gifts to us all. The new-born
Christ gives us mercy in life's trials and tribulations so that we
never lose the joy of Christmas and the peace of a new-born child."
The midnight mass was attended, among others, by the newly-elected
President of the Croatian Parliament, Vladimir Seks, and Deputy Prime
Minister Jadranka Kosor.
