VUKOVAR, Dec 13 (Hina) - The president of the Fund for the
Reconstruction and Development of Vukovar, Diana Galic, has said
that some 70 percent of the government's program for the
reconstruction and development of this eastern town in 2002 and
2003 has been implemented. #L#
Participating in the implementation of the program, along with the
Fund, are the Ministry of Public Works, Construction and
Reconstruction and the town authorities.
The government's programme for the reconstruction of Vukovar for
2002/2003 contains some 70 different projects, some of which will
continue to be implemented next year due to unresolved property-
rights issues, Galic told Hina.
The most important project is the start of construction works on an
economic zone, Galic said.
Twenty companies have shown interest in investing into that zone,
and potential investors will be offered 70 land plots the size of
which will range from 2,000 to 11,000 square metres, Galic said.
It is estimated that 600-1,000 people could be employed in the
zone.
The zone was established and is owned by the Fund for the
Reconstruction and Development of Vukovar, which, along with the
"Filir" company, owns the Danube River free zone.
This zone, which currently consists of three companies with 126
workers, started operating eight months ago.
Galic said that according to some estimates, doing business in
Vukovar was 40 percent cheaper than in other parts of the country
thanks to numerous privileges granted to investors under the law on
the reconstruction and development of Vukovar.
She recalled that one of the more important incentives was a program
for the co-financing of production-oriented projects in Vukovar.
According to some estimates, around 37 percent of the local
population are unemployed.
Galic believes that 2004 could be the crucial year for the town's
development.
She recalled that the outgoing government had adopted a programme
for the reconstruction and development of Vukovar in the next five
years. She believes that the town's economy will recover and start
developing during that period.
