Adnan Terzic told reporters in Sarajevo that the Bosnian government
could not accept the request of farmers to delay the implementation
of the free trade agreements which Bosnia had signed with Croatia
and Serbia-Montenegro. The deals, which come into force on 1
January 2004, envisage the annulment of import tariffs.
Associations of farmers in Bosnia's two entities -- the Croat-
Muslim Federation and the Republic of Srpska -- launched a campaign
a month ago to postpone the tariff-free import of agricultural
produce from Croatia and Serbia-Montenegro. Farmers fear that such
a model of import will devastate domestic production. They also
threaten to block border crossings on 1 January if their requests
are not met.
