The SEDM is a political and military forum aimed at strengthening
cooperation among South-East European countries, Italy and the
United States in the area of defence, to speed up the integration of
South-East European countries into trans-Atlantic associations,
especially NATO.
The meeting is attended by defence ministers from Albania,
Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey
and Ukraine and Moldavia, which are participating as observer-
countries. Delegations from Italy and the United States are also
expected.
The US delegation should submit a detailed report on the situation
in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The SEDM was established in Tirana in 1996 with the aim of promoting
cooperation among defence forces in the Balkans.
Croatia joined it in 2000 as its tenth member at a meeting in
Thessaloniki.
