ZAGREB, Oct 30 (Hina) - If the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) wins
next month's elections, it will immediately halt projects of
investing in hospitals worth seven billion kuna (EUR92 million)
which the incumbent government approved, HDZ vice president
Andrija Hebrang said on Thursday at a round-table debate on health
and elections. #L#
"We'll also stop the addition of a wing to the Zagreb Clinic
Hospital (KBC) because it's a political project," Hebrang said.
The debate, at which representatives of political parties
presented their health platforms, was organised by the corps of
journalists covering health and medicine.
Croatia does not have the money for such big investments, for the
building of garages and shopping malls, Hebrang said, adding that
one could not invest EUR73.2 million in one hospital when other
hospitals owed suppliers 250 million kuna (EUR32.9 million).
Health Minister Andro Vlahusic of Libra said calling off the
investments would mean going back "to the time when nothing was
being invested in the health sector".
Damage worth four billion kuna (EUR526 million) was caused under
the HDZ government when write-offs in the health sector were
abolished, he said.
Social Democratic Party vice president Zeljka Antunovic said the
addition of a wing to KBC Zagreb and other investments had to
continue as they constituted the first systemic investment in
hospitals in a decade.
Representatives of the Croatian Party of Rights, the Croatian
People's Party, the Social Liberals, and the Croatian Peasant Party
supported investing in the health sector by following expert,
rather than political reasons.
