The 34 year old former guard at the Serb-run detention camp, in June
this year pleaded guilty to the persecution of Muslims and Croats on
political, racial and religious grounds as a crime against
humanity. The ICTY Prosecutor's Office made a plea agreement with
the defendant and dropped another four counts of the indictment.
At a hearing in early September, both the prosecution and the
defence asked that Banovic be sentenced to eight years in prison.
Explaining the verdict, judge Patrick Robinson said Banovic
pleaded guilty to having regularly participated in molesting,
torturing, beating to death and killing of Muslim and Croat
prisoners.
The trial chamber accepted Banovic remorse and cooperation with the
prosecutors as mitigating circumstances.
