Annan on Friday called on Belgrade and Pristina to cooperate to
improve the life of the population of Kosovo. #L#
In his report on the work of the temporary UN administration in
Kosovo (UNMIK), submitted to the Security Council, Annan welcomed
the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade which started in Vienna
on 14 October and called on both sides to do their best to make it
result in concrete action that would improve living conditions in
Kosovo.
He commended the efforts of the temporary government in the
province in meeting the needs of its population.
However, he also pointed to security problems encountered by the
Serb minority and called for ensuring adequate minority
representation in municipal authorities.
Annan called on Kosovo Serbs to abolish parallel structures of
authority and cooperate with the multiethnic interim authorities.
Representatives of Kosovo's interim government and Serbian
officials met in Vienna on October 14 to start dialogue on practical
issues, without entering debates about Kosovo's future, which was
the first such meeting since the war in Kosovo in 1998-1999.
