This is the biggest tanker to have been built in Split's shipyard
Brodosplit. The 95-ton vessel is 229 metres long, 42 metres wide and
21 metres high. It is powered by a 13,530kW MAN engine and can sail
at a speed of almost 16 knots.
Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, who attended the ceremony, spoke
about the importance of this business success.
He described the shipbuilding industry as the most important
segment of the Croatian industry.
"The government must ensure funds in order to bail out five Croatian
shipyards, because the shipbuilding industry is a very important
export-oriented product, and this industry accounts for 12 percent
of Croatia's total export," Mesic said.
The tanker owner, Spyros Karnessis, voiced satisfaction with
cooperation with Croatian shipyards.
The delivery of the tanker, called Elka Aristotele, was three
months late owing to accidents that occurred during its
construction. Two workers were killed while working on the ship and
there were also some problems with launching it into the sea.
