BUDAPEST, Sept 30 (Hina) - Croatia and Hungary have achieved a high level of the protection of ethnic minorities, as it is proper for countries whose ethnic minorities are bridges connecting them, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Tuesday when he attended an annual session of self-government of Hungarian Croats.
#L# The leader of the Croat community in Hungary, Mijo Karagic, expressed fear that upon Hungary's entrance into the European Union next year and its start of the application of the Schengen regime on the border with Croatia, the border control would become tighter. Mesic said the border regime would be modified by the conclusion of an agreement on cross-border traffic between Zagreb and Budapest. Croats in Hungary asked the Croatian government to open a larger number of border crossings between the two countries, what President Mesic promised adding that this also would require the construction of adequate infrastructure. Later in the day, the Croatian head of state will hold talks with the Hungarian parliament's president, Katalina Szili, and Premier Peter Medgyessy, take part in a Hungarian-Croatian economic forum and give a lecture in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
