Cox arrived in Zagreb on Sunday at the head of a European Parliament
delegation on a four-day tour of southeastern Europe.
Cox said he wanted to officially thank Mesic for his courage in
political leadership during his last visit to Belgrade when
together with his Serbian counterpart he took an important symbolic
step in the light of events from the recent past.
The European Parliament president said he looked forward to close
cooperation with Croatia on its path to the European Union.
Mesic said they had discussed a series of "European topics and
current affairs in Croatia." "I informed the guests about Croatia's
efforts to reach European standards and join Euro-Atlantic
institutions as soon as possible. I mentioned our successes, but
also the difficulties we are having."
The Croatian president also informed the European Parliament
delegation about the situation in the region.
