economic zone in the Adriatic Sea would continue. #L#
"Croatia has the autonomous right to declare an economic zone, and
when it will do so depends only on us," Mesic told reporters
following a formal session of the Istria County Assembly.
He said that an economic zone would not put anyone in danger, but
would only safeguard the Adriatic.
Commenting on allegations by opposition politicians about their
phones being tapped, Mesic said that there had been no unauthorised
phone-tapping "although many now would like to be wire-tapped."
"When you hear what they say in public, you ask yourselves why would
anyone want to wiretap them. It's just a waste of time," the
president said.
Mesic went on to say that he supported inter-regional cooperation,
including the initiative by Riccardo Illy, chairman of the assembly
of the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, to establish a
transborder region that would consist of the Croatian counties of
Istria and Primorje-Gorski Kotar, the Italian regions of Friuli-
Venezia-Giulia and Veneto, the Austrian region of Corinthia and
Slovene regions. Mesic said he had received no official request for
this.
Asked if he had talked to US administration officials in New York
about sending Croatian troops to Iraq and about an agreement on non-
extradition of US citizens to the International Criminal Court,
Mesic there had only been informal talks, which he said is usual for
meetings taking place on the sidelines of UN General Assembly
sessions.
