Mesic will hold several bilateral meetings at the margins of the
conference, which will be attended by UNESCO Director Koichiro
Matsuura, the presidents of Albania, Bulgaria and Hungary and ex-
Yugoslav countries. There are open questions between Croatia and
some of the ex-Yugoslav states.
The Ohrid forum is aimed at strengthening peace and stability in the
region through understanding and dialogue among peoples, cultures,
religions, and the promotion of human rights and equality, UNESCO
said in a statement on the conference, which will be hosted by
Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski.
The UNESCO director will launch a set of projects in South-East
Europe with the aim of promoting dialogue among civilisations.
The Ohrid meeting was preceded by a number of conventions initiated
in 2001, the United Nations Year of Dialogue Among Civilisations.
The meeting was agreed on at a ministerial conference on
cooperation in South-East Europe in Paris in 2002.
