ZAGREB, Sept 6 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan has
called on schools, students and parents in Zagreb to enable two HIV
positive girls, Nina and Ela, to start school. #L#
Racan forwarded the appeal from an informal meeting of his Social
Democratic Party in Zagreb on Saturday.
"We have to end Ela and Nina's wandering around Croatia. I believe
there will be a school and class which will accept the two girls,"
Racan said, adding that Zagreb city authorities would do all so the
girls enrolled school in the next couple of weeks.
"If they do not enrol the school in Kutina, I am sure we will enrol
them in Zagreb. I believe Croatia will prove to be compassionate and
without prejudices," Racan said.
Asked whether the education minister could have done his job better
in this case, Racan said that "more could and should have been done,
but what has caused concern are the reactions we have witnessed".
Ela was enrolled in second grade of the Stjepan Kefelja primary
school in Kutina after the Oblak family, which has provided a home
for her and her younger sister Nina, decided to move from Kastel
Novi to their birthplace of Kutina.
Most parents whose children are supposed to attend classes with Ela
have refused this possibility, threatening to take their children
out of school.
Ela enrolled her first grade together with 16 other children in a
primary school in Kastel Novi, following numerous protests and
meetings by the children's parents. Until November 7 last year, she
had attended classes alone in the school library.
