NATIONAL SECURITY COMMITTEE CONCLUDES THREE-DAY SESSION

BRIJUNI, Sept 3 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament's Home Policy and National Security Committee ended a three-day session on Wednesday with the adoption of conclusions. #L# The session, attended by senior Croatian and foreign officials, discussed integral security and the fight against terrorism. In its conclusions, the committee expressed Croatia's firm commitment to building a joint defence and security identity, primarily within NATO, in combating global terrorism. It concluded that integral security was not threatened only by terrorism but also by numerous forms of criminal activities that go beyond the national borders. Organised crime, which may destabilise national institutions and undermine political, legal and economic systems, represents a major security risk for any country. That is why cooperation between countries is necessary in that area, the committee said. The committee said that efforts by Croatian state bodies to achieve integral security as a precondition for stable political and economic development, were not enough. "An effective fight for the preservation of democratic achievements requires close bilateral and multilateral cooperation of all countries striving for progress and stability," it said. The committee noted that the Croatian judiciary and courts could make a significant contribution to integral security and an effective fight against organised crime, urging them to speed up investigations and legal proceedings. The committee strongly supported reorganisation of the justice system, which plays a vital role in efforts to achieve integral security. It also positively assessed and agreed to the reform of the Croatian defence system. Because of the threat posed by present-day terrorism to the international community and Croatia, it is necessary to proceed with the efforts aimed at improving the protection of society and promoting cooperation in the anti-terrorist coalition, the committee concluded. It stressed that it was possible to raise the level of protection against terrorism through cooperation within the UN, the EU and NATO. The committee expressed resolute support for political dialogue with neighbours and reaffirmed Croatia's commitment to the policy of peace and cooperation. Committee chairman Ante Markov said he was confident that this session would contribute to the reform that was necessary for Croatia to meet the requirements for admission into Euro-Atlantic institutions.
