is no reason for him to enter into a conflict with the ruling
coalition or the opposition ahead of parliamentary elections. #L#
"Both sides want (elections) to take place in the autumn. If they
want them, let them have them," Mesic told the Zagreb-based daily
Jutarnji List in an interview to be published on Wednesday.
Asked why he thought it was better for elections to be held next
spring, the president said: "I think the spring is a better time,
because all the battles over the budget will be over by then."
"The situation now is too tense, but if everyone wants elections,
fine. I will give the winner a mandate (to form government)," he
added.
Prime Minister Ivica Racan said last month that parliamentary
elections would be held "in the second half of November" and that
the date depended on completion of the EU membership
questionnaire.
