DARUVAR, Aug 17 (Hina) - Croatian parliament president Zlatko
Tomcic said on Sunday the government would have to be fair in
helping those who suffered because of this year's draughts, water
shortage and fires. #L#
Parliament should hold an extraordinary session on the matter early
in September, Tomcic said while visiting Daruvar some 100 km east of
Zagreb.
Local officials and businessmen acquainted him with the problems
and damage caused by the current water shortage in the town. After
the flow of water recently fell from 80 litres to only 25 per second,
supply was cut to the largest users, causing extensive damage to the
economy.
Mayor Zvonko Cegledi said he would request Daruvar be declared a
disaster area because of the water shortage.
Tomcic said Croatia would "have to find systemic solutions in
improving the infrastructure" so that in the future, extreme
conditions such as this year's would not be as crippling.
