The delegation additionally presented the candidacy of the
northern Adriatic city of Rijeka to host the Mediterranean Games in
2009.
Expressing his support for Rijeka, Samaranch noted that Croatia had
proved itself as an excellent organiser of major sporting events,
such as the European Athletics Championship in Split in 1990 and the
international university students games, the Universiade, in
Zagreb in 1987.
The delegation consisted of Croatian Olympic Committee chairman
Zlatko Matesa, member of the International Olympic Committee Antun
Vrdoljak, Rijeka mayor Vojko Obersnel and Croatian ambassador to
Switzerland Mladen Andrlic.
