ZAGREB, Aug 12 (Hina) - The Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) said on
Tuesday that proclamation of an exclusive economic zone in the
Adriatic Sea was in the interests of Croatia's economy and
environment. #L#
The party said in a statement that the government should step up
diplomatic activity to protect Croatia's national interests, at
the same time respecting the legitimate interests of neighbouring
countries.
The HSS said its position was based on the knowledge that the fish in
the Adriatic were under great threat and the need to ensure
environmental protection of the Adriatic and establish control and
safety on the sea.
In the European Union, the fishing industry falls within the
competence of the European Commission, and proclamation of an
economic zone is treated as an exclusive right of every state, the
statement said.
The European Commission encourages member states in the
Mediterranean to declare an economic zone in order to enlarge an
area in which ships from European Union countries will have the
exclusive right to fish, at the same time excluding fishing vessels
from third countries.
Six months ago, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bozidar
Pankretic talked to EU Agriculture and Fisheries Commissioner
Franz Fischler about fishing policy reform, which recommends
proclamation of an economic zone. The HSS is of the view that
diplomatic activity at the time should have been more intensive.
