After an incident caused by Croatian fans at the June 15 match,
riots broke out in Novi Sad and Belgrade. In the capital, hooligans
smashed windows on the building of the Croatian embassy, removing
the flag and coat of arms. Dozens were arrested.
Sreten Lukic said in the Serbian parliament today police had been
forced to fire shots in the air during the incidents in Novi Sad to
disperse the hooligans who wanted to break into the Novi Sad
assembly building and set it on fire.
Lukic said those arrested had admitted so to the police. They were
young radicals and supporters of extreme right-wing parties and
organisations.
That same evening in front of the Croatian embassy in Belgrade,
circumstances warranted for police to use arms but if they had done
so the situation would likely have been worse than in Novi Sad, said
Lukic.
