ROME, July 3 (Hina) - Predrag Matvejevic on Wednesday evening
received the literature award called Strega at a ceremony held in
Rome. #L#
Matvejevic is the first non-Italian to have been given this ward. In
the last five decades the award was a national one in Italy. The
award European Strega was recently set up at the proposal of Italy's
foreign ministry after this country took over the chairmanship of
the EU.
Matvejevic, who was awarded for his book entitled "Druga Venecija"
("Another Venice" in an unofficial translation) said at the
ceremony last night that he felt as a real European given that "my
mother is a Croat, my father is a Russian, I was born in Mostar
(Bosnia-Herzegovina), and I lived in Zagreb and Paris and now am
living in Rome".
The jury for the selection of this year's award winner consisted of
all the previous Strega laureates.
