ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - The Croatian Christian Democratic Union
(HKDU) on Tuesday voiced its deep discontent over a decision to
present writer Miljenko Jergovic with Matrix Croatica's annual
award for literature. #L#
In today's statement, the HKDU says that as a parliamentary party
participating in the vote on Matrix Croatia's annual budget, it
deeply disagrees with the decision of its experts who, the
statement reads, in presenting the award for literature did not
take into consideration "Jergovic's entire public activity but
only his literary work".
Explaining why Jergovic is "unsuitable" to be a Matrix Croatica
laureate, the HKDU says that even though Croatia gave him shelter as
a writer from Sarajevo during the Greater Serbia aggression, as
soon as he arrived in Croatia "he belittled the struggle of the
Croatian people for independence on a number of occasions, widely
expressing his stances in Croatian and foreign media".
Vlaho Bogisic, Matrix Croatica vice president and a jury member in
the presentation of awards, has said it is inconceivable that in
contemporary Croatia Matrix Croatia is being politically
lectured.
